IELTS Listening
Test Format and Key Strategies
IELTS Listening is a test of your ability to identify meaning rather than individual words. It is common for students to lose marks because they misunderstand meaning, write answers in the wrong form, or struggle to stay focused as the audio continues.
Here you’ll find an overview of the listening test format, along with essential tips to avoid common mistakes and links to our free guided listening tests. If you want faster improvement, you can also book listening-focused one-to-one lessons.
How the IELTS Listening test works
The IELTS Listening Test has 4 sections and 40 questions. The audio is played once only. You must answer as you listen, and your score is based on the number of correct answers.
The test begins with an easier everyday conversation, before moving to an everyday monologue. The second half of the test has a more academic context with what is often a group conversation at a university and an academic monologue. Question types include form completion, multiple choice, matching, map/diagram labelling, and sentence completion.
Essential tips that improve your score
- Use the reading time. Predict the topic, the answer type (number/noun/name), and possible synonyms.
- Track the questions. Don’t panic if you miss an answer; move on immediately or you will miss the next answers too.
- Watch word forms. Plurals, verb tense, articles, and spelling mistakes all lose marks.
- Listen for paraphrase. The audio rarely repeats the exact words from the question.
- Follow signposting. Words like “first”, “however”, “so”, and “finally” often indicate the answer is coming.
